Estimate Your Hardscape Project

Outdoor budgets swing widely because paving material, slope, and drainage change the amount of work under the surface. Set your project area, pick a material, describe the site, and check the features you want. The tool returns a planning range with a line-by-line breakdown.

Cost Breakdown

This is a planning estimate, not a quote or a bid. Drainage, soil conditions, and site access are the biggest cost variables on a hardscape project and can only be assessed on site. 9Builders gives you a firm number after a free consultation and site visit.

Hardscape Cost FAQ

Common questions about hardscape and landscape budgets in the Bay Area.

Poured concrete is the lowest cost per square foot and works well on flat, stable ground. Its weakness is cracking: once a slab cracks or settles, the repair is a visible patch or a full pour. Interlocking pavers cost roughly 40 to 80 percent more up front, but they flex with ground movement, and a settled or stained section can be lifted and reset piece by piece. On Bay Area clay soils that shrink and swell with the seasons, that repairability is usually what makes pavers worth the extra cost over a 15 to 25 year horizon. Stamped concrete sits in between on price and gives you pattern and color, but it shares the crack behavior of plain concrete and the color coat needs resealing every few years.

It depends on what you build. A ground-level patio, walkway, or driveway replacement often does not need a building permit, though many cities still regulate how much of the lot you can cover with hard surfaces. Retaining walls over 4 feet, and any wall carrying a surcharge, generally require a permit and an engineered design. Outdoor kitchens with gas or plumbing, low-voltage lighting circuits fed from a new panel, pergolas over a certain size, and decks above a set height also trigger permits in most jurisdictions. Requirements vary by city and by lot, so 9Builders confirms the scope with your building department before construction starts.

They drive it more than the paving material does. A steep or hard-to-reach yard means material gets moved by hand or small equipment instead of a loader, which can add 20 to 40 percent to excavation and base work alone. Slope also forces retaining, terracing, or deeper base sections. Drainage is the other half: water has to leave the site somewhere legal, so a project can need French drains, dry wells, area drains, or regrading, and that work is buried where you never see it. Skipping it is the most common reason a patio heaves or a wall fails a few years later. This is why an on-site assessment is the only way to get a firm number.
